“Certain things leave you in your life and certain things stay with you. And that's why we're all interested in movies- those ones that make you feel, you still think about. Because it gave you such an emotional response, it's actually part of your emotional make-up, in a way.”
by Tim Burton from his book ‘Burton on Burton’
‘Felix’ – the Audience Award winner of the 34th Durban International Film Festival is exactly the kind of film Tim Burton is talking about. Tangled in our day-to-day life, losing our sense of purpose, but still clinging on to the hope… hope of a better tomorrow and hope of following and fulfilling our dreams someday - this is the way more than 70% of the world population lives. When we see films like ‘Felix’, our hope is renewed and we rejoice the fact that, if not us, then at least some other person was able to do it. And maybe, we’ll be able to fulfill our dreams too.. someday..
The movie revolves around the Felix Xaba, a 14-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a saxophonist like his late father, despite his mother Lindiwe thinking jazz is the devil’s music. To realise his dream, he leaves his hometown and friends, defies his mother by taking up a scholarship at an elite private school and invites the help of his father’s old band-mates to prepare for the jazz concert at his school. Peter Machen, the manager of the Durban International Film Festival, called Felix “a South African equivalent of Billy Elliott… a lovely, vibrant, feel good film about a young township boy intent on following his dreams.” The announcement of the Audience Award was done on the closing night event of Southern Africa’s premiere film festival at the Suncoast CineCentre Cinema.
If you have a dream, just like Felix Xaba, Opulentus wishes you wholeheartedly for the fulfillment of that. And if you love South African movies, culture, traditions and everything related to it… if your dream involves visiting, studying, working, investing or migrating to South Africa, then let us be a part of it too. We promise to fulfill it as nothing gives us more happiness that seeing your wishes come true.
